The Attributes of God

“Yield now (or know intimately) and be at peace with Him; Thereby good will come to you.(Job 22:21). Thus says the Lord, Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches; but let him who boasts boast of this, that he understands and knows Me, that I am the Lord who exercises lovingkindness, justice and righteousness on earth; for I delight in these things, declares the Lord." (Jer 9:23,24).

A spiritual and saving knowledge of God is the greatest need of every human creature.

The foundation of all true knowledge of God must be a clear mental apprehension of His perfections as revealed in Holy Scripture. An unknown God can neither be trusted, served, nor worshipped. In this booklet an effort has been made to set forth some of the principal perfections of the Divine character.

Something more than a theoretical knowledge of God is needed by us. God is only truly known in the soul as we yield ourselves to Him, submit to His authority, and regulate all the details of our lives by His holy precepts and commandments. "Then shall we know, if we follow on (in the path of obedience) to know the Lord" (Hosea 6:3 KJV). "If any man will do His will, he shall know" (John 7:17 KJV). "The people that do know their God shall be strong" (Dan. 11:32 KJV)

**(Taken from the forward of A.W. Pink, "The Attributes of God".)**

God is incomparable:

2 Samuel 7:18-22
18 Then David the king went in and sat before the Lord, and he said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that You have brought me this far?
19 “And yet this was insignificant in Your eyes, O Lord God, for You have spoken also of the house of Your servant concerning the distant future. And this is the custom of man, O Lord God.
20 “Again what more can David say to You? For You know Your servant, O Lord God!
21 “For the sake of Your word, and according to Your own heart, You have done all this greatness to let Your servant know.
22 “For this reason You are great, O Lord God; for there is none like You, and there is no God besides You, according to all that we have heard with our ears.

God is invisible:

John 1:14-18
14 And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 John testified about Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me has a higher rank than I, for He existed before me.’ ”
16 For of His fullness we have all received, and grace upon grace.
17 For the Law was given through Moses; grace and truth were realized through Jesus Christ.
18 No one has seen God at any time; the only begotten God who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him.

God is inscrutable:

Isaiah 40:27-28
27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and assert, O Israel,
“My way is hidden from the Lord,
And the justice due me escapes the notice of my God”?
28 Do you not know? Have you not heard?
The Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth
Does not become weary or tired.
His understanding is inscrutable.

God is unchangeable:

Numbers 23:19
19 “God is not a man, that He should lie,
Nor a son of man, that He should repent;
Has He said, and will He not do it?
Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?

God is unequaled:

Isaiah 40:12-26
12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of His hand,
And marked off the heavens by the span,
And calculated the dust of the earth by the measure,
And weighed the mountains in a balance
And the hills in a pair of scales?
13 Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord,
Or as His counselor has informed Him?
14 With whom did He consult and who gave Him understanding?
And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge
And informed Him of the way of understanding?
15 Behold, the nations are like a drop from a bucket,
And are regarded as a speck of dust on the scales;
Behold, He lifts up the islands like fine dust.
16 Even Lebanon is not enough to burn,
Nor its beasts enough for a burnt offering.
17 All the nations are as nothing before Him,
They are regarded by Him as less than nothing and meaningless.
18 To whom then will you liken God?
Or what likeness will you compare with Him?
19 As for the idol, a craftsman casts it,
A goldsmith plates it with gold,
And a silversmith fashions chains of silver.
20 He who is too impoverished for such an offering
Selects a tree that does not rot;
He seeks out for himself a skillful craftsman
To prepare an idol that will not totter.
21 Do you not know? Have you not heard?
Has it not been declared to you from the beginning?
Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth?
22 It is He who sits above the circle of the earth,
And its inhabitants are like grasshoppers,
Who stretches out the heavens like a curtain
And spreads them out like a tent to dwell in.
23 He it is who reduces rulers to nothing,
Who makes the judges of the earth meaningless.
24 Scarcely have they been planted,
Scarcely have they been sown,
Scarcely has their stock taken root in the earth,
But He merely blows on them, and they wither,
And the storm carries them away like stubble.
25 “To whom then will you liken Me
That I would be his equal?” says the Holy One.
26 Lift up your eyes on high
And see who has created these stars,
The One who leads forth their host by number,
He calls them all by name;
Because of the greatness of His might and the strength of His power,
Not one of them is missing.

God is unsearchable:

Romans 11:33-36
33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways!
34 For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor?
35 Or who has first given to Him that it might be paid back to him again?
36 For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen.

God is infinite:

1 Kings 8:22-27
22 Then Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel and spread out his hands toward heaven.
23 He said, “O Lord, the God of Israel, there is no God like You in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and showing lovingkindness to Your servants who walk before You with all their heart,
24 who have kept with Your servant, my father David, that which You have promised him; indeed, You have spoken with Your mouth and have fulfilled it with Your hand as it is this day.
25 “Now therefore, O Lord, the God of Israel, keep with Your servant David my father that which You have promised him, saying, ‘You shall not lack a man to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your sons take heed to their way to walk before Me as you have walked.’
26 “Now therefore, O God of Israel, let Your word, I pray, be confirmed which You have spoken to Your servant, my father David.
27 “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built!

God is eternal:

Deuteronomy 33:26-27
26 “There is none like the God of Jeshurun*,
Who rides the heavens to your help,
And through the skies in His majesty.
27 “The eternal God is a dwelling place,
And underneath are the everlasting arms;
And He drove out the enemy from before you,
And said, ‘Destroy!’

*Jeshurun — a poetical name for the people of Israel, used in token of affection, meaning, “the dear upright people” (Deut. 32:15; 33:5, 26; Isa. 44:2).

Psalm 90:1-2
1 Lord, You have been our dwelling place in all generations.
2 Before the mountains were born
Or You gave birth to the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.
Isaiah 57:13-15
13 “When you cry out, let your collection of idols deliver you.
But the wind will carry all of them up,
And a breath will take them away.
But he who takes refuge in Me will inherit the land
And will possess My holy mountain.”
14 And it will be said,
“Build up, build up, prepare the way,
Remove every obstacle out of the way of My people.”
15 For thus says the high and exalted One
Who lives forever, whose name is Holy,
“I dwell on a high and holy place,
And also with the contrite and lowly of spirit
In order to revive the spirit of the lowly
And to revive the heart of the contrite.

God is omnipotent:

Jeremiah 32:17
17 ‘Ah Lord God! Behold, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and by Your outstretched arm! Nothing is too difficult for You,
Revelation 19: 6 Then I heard something like the voice of a great multitude and like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying,
“Hallelujah! For the Lord our *God, the Almighty, reigns.

*Revelation 19:6 (KJV)
6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord
*God omnipotent reigneth.

*El (God) Shaddai — the Omnipotent, the name of God in frequent use in the Hebrew Scriptures, generally translated “the Almighty.”

Genesis 18:13-14
13 And the Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh, saying, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, when I am so old?’
14 “Is anything too difficult for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, at this time next year, and Sarah will have a son.”

God is omnipresent:

Psalm 139:7-12
7 Where can I go from Your Spirit?
Or where can I flee from Your presence?
8 If I ascend to heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in *Sheol, behold, You are there.
9 If I take the wings of the dawn,
If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,
10 Even there Your hand will lead me,
And Your right hand will lay hold of me.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me,
And the light around me will be night,”
12 Even the darkness is not dark to You,
And the night is as bright as the day.
Darkness and light are alike to You.

*The term Sheol is used in the OT to denote the underworld, i.e., the abode of the dead. (NASB Topical Index.)

God is omniscient:

Psalm 139:1-6
1 O Lord, You have searched me and known me.
2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
You understand my thought from afar.
3 You scrutinize my path and my lying down,
And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.
4 Even before there is a word on my tongue,
Behold, O Lord, You know it all.
5 You have enclosed me behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is too high, I cannot attain to it.
1 John 3:18-20
18 Little children, let us not love with word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.
19 We will know by this that we are of the truth, and will assure our heart before Him
20 in whatever our heart condemns us; for God is greater than our heart and knows all things.
Isaiah 40:13-14
13 Who has directed the Spirit of the Lord,
Or as His counselor has informed Him?
14 With whom did He consult and who gave Him understanding?
And who taught Him in the path of justice and taught Him knowledge
And informed Him of the way of understanding?

God is foreknowing:

Isaiah 48:3-5
3 “I declared the former things long ago
And they went forth from My mouth, and I proclaimed them.
Suddenly I acted, and they came to pass.
4 “Because I know that you are obstinate,
And your neck is an iron sinew
And your forehead bronze,
5 Therefore I declared them to you long ago,
Before they took place I proclaimed them to you,
So that you would not say, ‘My idol has done them,
And my graven image and my molten image have commanded them.
Acts 2:22-23
22 “Men of Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders and signs which God performed through Him in your midst, just as you yourselves know—
23 this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of godless men and put Him to death.

God is wise:

Proverbs 3:19    The Lord by wisdom founded the earth,
By understanding He established the heavens.
1 Timothy 1:17 (KJV) Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Acts 15:18 Says the Lord, who makes these things known from long ago.

God is Holy:

Leviticus 19:2  “Speak to all the congregation of the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.
1 Peter 1:15-16
15     but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16     because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Revelation 4:8     And the four living creatures, each one of them having six wings, are full of eyes around and within; and day and night they do not cease to say,
“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God, the Almighty, who was and who is and who is to come.”

God is impartial:

1 Peter 1:17     If you address as Father the One who impartially judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your stay on earth;

God is just:

Psalm 89:14     Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;
Lovingkindness and truth go before You.

God is longsuffering:

Exodus 34:6-7
6     Then the Lord passed by in front of him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth;     7     who keeps lovingkindness for thousands, who forgives iniquity, transgression and sin; yet He will by no means leave the guilty unpunished, visiting the iniquity of fathers on the children and on the grandchildren to the third and fourth generations.”.

God is love:

1 John 4:8     The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
1 John 4:16     We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
Romans 5:8     But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
1 Jn 3:16     We know love by this, that He laid down His life for us; and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

God is merciful:

Psalm 103:8-17
8     The Lord is compassionate and gracious,
Slow to anger and abounding in lovingkindness.
9     He will not always strive with us,
Nor will He keep His anger forever.
10     He has not dealt with us according to our sins,
Nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.
11     For as high as the heavens are above the earth,
So great is His lovingkindness toward those who fear Him.
12     As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He removed our transgressions from us.
13     Just as a father has compassion on his children,
So the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him.
14     For He Himself knows our frame;
He is mindful that we are but dust.
15     As for man, his days are like grass;
As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.
16     When the wind has passed over it, it is no more,
And its place acknowledges it no longer.
17     But the lovingkindness of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him,
And His righteousness to children’s children,
Lamentations 3:22-23
22     The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease,For His compassions never fail.
23     They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.

God is truth:

Psalm 117:2     For His lovingkindness is great toward us,
And the truth of the Lord is everlasting.
Praise the Lord!
John 17:3      “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.
Titus 1:1-2
1     Paul, a bond-servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the faith of those chosen of God and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness, 2     in the hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised long ages ago,

A God of revenge:

Deuteronomy 32:34-41
34     ‘Is it not laid up in store with Me,Sealed up in My treasuries?
35     ‘Vengeance is Mine, and retribution,In due time their foot will slip;
For the day of their calamity is near, And the impending things are hastening upon them.’
36     “For the Lord will vindicate His people,And will have compassion on His servants,
When He sees that their strength is gone, And there is none remaining, bond or free.
37     “And He will say, ‘Where are their gods,The rock in which they sought refuge?
38     ‘Who ate the fat of their sacrifices,And drank the wine of their drink offering?
Let them rise up and help you, Let them be your hiding place!
39     ‘See now that I, I am He,And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life.
I have wounded and it is I who heal, And there is no one who can deliver from My hand.
40     ‘Indeed, I lift up My hand to heaven,And say, as I live forever,  41     If I sharpen My flashing sword,
And My hand takes hold on justice, I will render vengeance on My adversaries, And I will repay those who hate Me.

A God of wrath:

Deuteronomy 32:22     For a fire is kindled in My anger, And burns to the lowest part of Sheol, And consumes the earth with its yield, And sets on fire the foundations of the mountains.

God is sovereign:

Isaiah 46:9-11
9     “Remember the former things long past,For I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is no one like Me, 10     Declaring the end from the beginning, And from ancient times things which have not been done, Saying, ‘My purpose will be established,And I will accomplish all My good pleasure’; 11     Calling a bird of prey from the east, The man of My purpose from a far country. Truly I have spoken; truly I will bring it to pass. I have planned it, surely I will do it.

God is faithful:

Deuteronomy 7:9     “Know therefore that the Lord your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments;
Psalm 89:1-2
1     I will sing of the lovingkindness of the Lord forever; To all generations I will make known Your faithfulness with my mouth.
 2     For I have said, “Lovingkindness will be built up forever;In the heavens You will establish Your faithfulness.”

God is gracious:

Psalm 111:4    He has made His wonders to be remembered;
The Lord is gracious and compassionate.
1 Peter 5:10     After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you.

God is good:

Psalm 107:8     Let them give thanks to the Lord for His lovingkindness,
And for His wonders to the sons of men!
